Understanding cavoodle coat types

One of the most common questions we get from families is about coat types, what they look like, how they feel, and what they mean for grooming and maintenance.
Cavoodles can have a range of coat types, depending on their genetics:
Curly (double curl) – most similar to a Poodle coat, dense and soft
Wavy (single curl) – a soft, fluffy coat with gentle movement
Straight (zero curl) – a looser, more natural wave with a silky texture
Unfurnished – a smooth, Cavalier-style coat with no facial furnishings
What often surprises people is that when these coats are professionally groomed, it can be quite difficult to tell the difference between them at a glance, especially between curly, wavy, and straight coats. As you can see in this photo, they all present beautifully with that signature “teddy bear” look
The main difference really comes down to maintenance.
Curly, wavy, and straight (furnished) coats all benefit from regular grooming every 6–8 weeks, along with consistent brushing at home to keep them comfortable and mat-free.
The unfurnished coat, on the other hand, is much lower maintenance. It doesn’t require the same level of regular grooming and may shed lightly, making it a different (but still lovely) option for families depending on their lifestyle.
At the end of the day, there’s no “better” coat, just the one that best suits your home, your routine, and what you’re looking for in a companion
