How ENS and ESI Shape Lucy’s Puppies
At just three days old, Lucy’s newborn puppies are beginning a journey that will shape their future as confident, well-adjusted adult dogs. While they may appear tiny and fragile, this early stage is a critical window for development. Through Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) and Early Scent Introduction (ESI), we provide them with gentle, purposeful experiences that lay the groundwork for lifelong resilience and adaptability.
What Is Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)?
ENS is a series of five simple exercises performed daily from days 3 to 16 of a puppy’s life. These include:
Tactile stimulation (tickling between the toes)
Holding the puppy upright and then with the head down
Placing the puppy on its back (supine position)
Brief exposure to a cool surface
These mild stressors activate the developing neurological system, leading to benefits such as improved cardiovascular health, stronger adrenal function, enhanced stress tolerance, and greater resistance to disease.
What Is Early Scent Introduction (ESI)?
ESI involves introducing a different safe scent to each puppy daily during the same 3–16 day period. By gently exposing puppies to various scents, we stimulate their olfactory system, enhancing their ability to identify and react to scents. This practice not only sharpens their sense of smell but also contributes to increased confidence and adaptability in new environments.
Why It Matters
Research indicates that while genetics play a role in a puppy's development, environmental factors and early experiences significantly influence their behavior and health. By incorporating ENS and ESI into our early care routine, we help Lucy’s puppies develop into dogs that are more curious, resilient, and better equipped to handle stress.
We will capture videos of the puppies running through their program in a few days time.
